RESUMO

The development of the mining industry has resulted in the accumulation of large amounts of waste, which effectively degrades the environment. The aim of this study is to check whether the addition of post-flotation sludge from copper production to the typical ceramic mass of the "gress porcelanato" will allow to obtain qualified sintered or faience tiles. By adding successive amounts of post-flotation sludge to the high-quality lamellar mass, typical parameters such as firing shrinkage, water absorbability and bending strength after firing were assessed. The structure of the obtained ceramic materials, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM with EDS), was also determined. Obtaining positive results would allow not only to significantly reduce the production costs of ceramic tiles, because the sludge is finely divided and no grinding is necessary, but, above all, will allow to eliminate the environmental risk. The present study has shown that it is possible to introduce up to 20% post-flotation sludge for gres porcellanato tile production and up to 50% post-flotation slugde for faience tile production. Both types of ceramic materials with an appropriate proportion of sludge, meet the requirements of tile standards in terms of mechanical strength and water absorption.

RESUMO

Dyes are intensively used in textile and dyeing industries, and substantial volumes of organic wastewater with residual dye require treatment before discharges to public waterways. Flotation separation is an efficient and widely used method for the treatment of massive organic dye wastewaters. The key scientific problems for dye flotation separation lie in the mineralization transformation of dissolved dye to tangible flocs. In this work, a high-efficiency removal of hazardous azo dye Congo red (CR) from simulated wastewaters via metal ions chelation flocculation followed by flotation separation was proposed. It's demonstrated that CR can be chelated by the trivalent metal ions, including Al(III), Fe(III), and its mixture to form hydrophobic flocs, and then the flocs were efficiently removed via flotation in a microbubble column. The effects of chelation flocculation and flotation separation conditions on the removal efficiencies of CR, COD, and chromaticity from CR simulated wastewaters were optimized. Chelation effect of CR by trivalent metal ions was in this order: Al(III)+Fe(III)>Fe(III)>Al(III). The chelation mechanism suggested that CR molecules gradually changed from hydrazones to electronegative azo with the increase of pH to 6-7, and electrostatic attraction between the Al3(OH)45+ or Fe(OH)2+ with the CR was favorable for the chelation reaction, in which the metal ions chelated with N atoms on naphthalene ring and amino groups of CR. Over 99% CR was removed under the optimal chelation and flotation conditions: chelation by composite Al(III)/Fe(III) with a concentration of 25 mg/L at pH of 7 for 25min; followed by flotation with SDS concentration of 20 mg/L and air flow rate of 50 mL/min for 20min. Under this condition, the COD and chromaticity removal efficiency were over 96% and 98%, respectively, and the turbidity was lower than 0.1 NTU, meeting the water discharge requirement. Eventually, resourceful utilization of flotation sludge via calcination was conducted to prepare Al-Fe spinel refractory material.

RESUMO

Abstract Flotation sludge (FS) is produced in huge amounts at slaughterhouses in western Santa Catarina, Brazil. This waste is rich in plant nutrients and a valuable resource for soil amendments. Five FS composts were tested as a replacement for chemical fertilizers (QF), namely T1 (75% poultry manure (PM) and 25% sawdust (SD)); T2 (50% PM and 50% SD); T3 (25% PM and 75% SD); T4 (100% PM and 0% SD); and T5 (0% PM x 100% SD). For lettuce plants, treatments containing composted FS resulted in an increased number of leaves, leaf area and leaf fresh weight (LFW). T1 presented the best results with increases of 1.4 fold in LFW compared to plants supplemented with QF. T2 was the most effective treatment for radish with the best results of root fresh weight and root diameter. Although T4 had the highest nitrogen content, it did not present the best results in growth performance for lettuce or radish. The presence of higher proportions of SD in composts (25% for lettuce and 50% for radish) improved the physical characteristics of the soil and proved to be a more balanced compost.

RESUMO

This work aimed to enhance the anaerobic digestion of fat-rich dissolved air flotation (DAF) sludge through chemical, thermobaric, and thermochemical pre-treatment methods. Soluble chemical oxygen demand was enhanced from 16.3% in the control to 20.84% (thermobaric), 40.82% (chemical), and 50.7% (thermochemical). Pre-treatment altered volatile fatty acid concentration by -64% (thermobaric), 127% (chemical) and 228% (thermochemical). Early inhibition was reduced by 20% in the thermochemical group, and 100% in the thermobaric group. Specific methane production was enhanced by 3.28% (chemical), 8.32% (thermobaric), and 8.49% (thermochemical) as a result of pre-treatment. Under batch digestion, thermobaric pre-treatment demonstrated the greatest improvement in methane yield with respect to degree of pre-treatment applied. Thermobaric pre-treatment was also the most viable for implementation at slaughterhouses, with potential for heat-exchange to reduce pre-treatment cost. Further investigation into long-term impact of pre-treatments in semi-continuous digestion experiments will provide additional evaluation of appropriate pre-treatment options for high-fat slaughterhouse wastewater.
